Queen Viharamahadevi Statue is a monumental sculpture in the heart of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. It stands proudly at Galle Face Green, offering a majestic view with its grand size and architectural detail. The statue was built in honour of Queen Viharamahadevi, the 12th queen consort of King Parakramabahu II. She reigned over the country during the period 1174 to 1186 CE and was known for her righteousness and dedication to improving society through charitable work. The monument was erected by public subscription in 1952 and unveiled to the public on January 7th, 1953.
Standing at an impressive height of 18 ft (5.49 m), the bronze-plated sculpture depicts Queen Viharamahadevi as a graceful woman draped in a flowing saree with both feet firmly planted on an elevated pedestal that symbolizes her eminence and strength of mind. She holds two flags on either side, representing justice which she believed in strongly throughout her rule. Her facial features have been sculpted with exquisite craftsmanship, giving her a compassionate yet dignified expression that has stood through time. The statue also houses another figure known as 'Dutugemunu', who symbolizes his role as conqueror of Elara from ancient times, who is seen bowing to Queen Viharamahadevi who acted as his mentor throughout his rule.
The monument is not only an icon for Queens' legacy but also represents her undying support for education, healthcare and charity work throughout Sri Lanka's history. This was recognized by UNESCO when they announced it as a World Heritage Site in 2013 due to its cultural significance and importance as part of Sri Lanka's history since antiquity. Even today Queen Viharamahadevi's iconic presence continues to be seen across Colombo cityscape inspiring people everywhere with her values and principles she strived for so valiantly during her reign over Sri Lanka centuries ago.
